We are very proud that there has been an active web related SIG since the late 1990's.  Here are some of our past meetings.

  • Web Development SIG - Open Source Content Management Systems: Joomla! & Drupal
    Saturday, 4/18/2009
Drupal (drupal.org) and Joomla! (www.joomla.org) are both free, open source content management systems which allow individuals to build websites, manage online content, and offer an array of online applications. Both use PHP programming language and can use the MySQL database. Learn about Open Source Content Management Systems and the advantages of both Joomla! and Drupal at our Saturday, April 18, 2009, meeting.

Jeff Schuler (www.jeffschuler.net), the creator of the Drupal Cleveland (http://drupalcleveland.info/) website for Drupal users and developers in Cleveland, will speak on Drupal's features.

Presenting on Joomla! is Bryan Salva, Lead Designer and Owner of BSalva.com Web Management, who led the presentation on Open Source Content Management Systems at last year's Cleveland Software Freedom Day.

    Learn how to use Adobe Fireworks CS4 software to rapidly create interactive website prototypes. Creating interactive prototypes offers the opportunity to test a website mock-up while still in the development stage. This is particularly helpful for customer demonstrations.

    Marc Majers is the Manager of Web Development at the Cleveland Institute of Art. His skill set is centered on the desire to keep learning. He is a blogger, teacher, emcee, musician, and award-winning web professional. His more than ten years of digital design experience focuses on web strategy, user-centered design, usability testing, and new media.

  • MySQL Database Session

    PLEASE NOTE DATE: We will be meeting the fourth Saturday (January 24th) at our normal location and time (10:30 A.M.). Next month we will return to the 3rd Saturday (February 21st).


    MySQL has become the world's most popular open source database because of its consistent fast performance, high reliability and ease of use. It's used on every continent (yes, even Antarctica!) by individual Web developers as well as many of the world's largest and fastest-growing organizations to save time and money powering their high-volume Web sites, business-critical systems and packaged software.

    In this session, we will begin with an overview of MySQL and discuss the features and functionality that compel organizations, including industry leaders such as Yahoo!, Facebook, Google, Wikipedia, YouTube, and Zappos.com, to adopt MySQL. In addition, we'll cover what you need to start implementing MySQL, including installation, management and support.

  • .Net’s Membership and Role Providers

    We started 2008 at our January meeting by learning a Simple ASP.NET Password process. Now, for our December 20, 2008, meeting we will end the year by learning about a more sophisticated .Net authentication system.

    .Net Membership and Role Provider classes are Microsoft's built-in classes for managing user authentication and role management. We will see a demonstration of how to use the wizard which sets up the system, including building a SQL database for membership and creating password management code. We will also learn about setting up custom membership and role manager to work with our existing Active Directory Authentication and database roles. The demonstration will include how to use roles to hide or show menu items as well as control page access.

  • Website Usability

    At our November meeting, we will be looking at usability in the context of e-commerce websites. Aaron Rosenberg, User Experience Analyst at American Greetings, will start with a brief introduction of User Experience and how it fits into the development process. He will then speak specifically with regard to tracking and understanding user needs and building them into the design of websites.

    Mashups

    What’s a Mashup? From Wikipedia “ In technology, a mashup is a web application that combines data from more than one source into a single integrated tool; an example is the use of cartographic data from Google Maps to add location information to real-estate data, thereby creating a new and distinct web service that was not originally provided by either source. Mashup originally referred to the practice in pop music (notably hip-hop) of producing a new song by mixing two or more existing pieces.”

    We will look at a couple mashups that others have built using Google Maps. Then we will look at Microsoft’s Popfly http://www.popfly.com/ which is a web based tool for creating your own mashups.

    Easy Ways to Make Flash

    Until recently, it was very complicated to make Flash files. Not anymore. We will look at Sprout http://sproutbuilder.com/ and iSpring http://www.ispringsolutions.com/ where almost anyone can make Flash files.

    Sprout is a free web based tool for making Flash files. We will show how you can combine a variety of content into a flash widget that you can post and share with others. We will talk about a key feature of Sprout, which is viral marketing.

    You can convert your PowerPoint presentations into Flash files for posting on the web. iSpring Pro 3 from iSpring lets you convert your PPT files and enchance them.

    WebPlus advertises that it is an affordable, easy-to-use Web designer software, and that it can create professional websites for a fraction of the cost of other web design programs. WebPlus allows the experienced user to directly edit the HTML code associated with the objects it creates, and to add your own separate HTML pages. For beginners, "anyone can create a stylish website in minutes." Come to the February 16th Web Development SIG meeting for Dan Kozminski's presention on WebPlus (www.serif.com/webplus/webplus9/).

    We will also be looking at free web development software in the "If It's for Free, It's for Me!," section of the meeting. Several free resources for HTML development, graphic software, and other web-related tools will be presented. Web Development SIG Members are encouraged to share the free and low-cost web development resources that they use.

DotNetNuke is an open-source web application framework, ideal for creating, deploying, and managing interactive web, intranet, and extranet sites. DotNetNuke is designed for use on the Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0 platform.

There are claims that many of the shortcomings of Frontpage have been corrected with this new software oriented toward professional applications.     We have a special guest this month from Adobe to demonstrate that company's powerful Web Design suite of products, particularly GoLive.

    Adam Pratt is an Application Engineer at Adobe Systems and he's an Adobe Certified Expert in GoLive, Photoshop, LiveMotion, Illustrator, InDesign, PageMaker, and Acrobat. He joins us from Chicago where he's worked in print, multimedia, and web design for several publishers and web development companies. He also co-authored SAMS Teach Yourself GoLive 6 in 24 Hours.

    Kevin Reilly is the Director of Project Management for DeVore Technologies. DeVore is an IT training and development company that has grown to serve most of the largest companies in NE Ohio over the last 12+ years.
    As was once wisely stated that "necessity is the mother of invention". This sentiment sums up the genesis of the eNewsPress 3.0 (eNP3). A few years ago a large client asked if DeVore could provide an internal email communications system that would allow division leaders to format and distribute technical information throughout the organization. The system needed to be efficient, and allow for content editing and archival of the "newsletters" on the company Intranet. Non-technical users needed the ability to create the HTML-based communications without coding knowledge through the use of their web browsers.
    DeVore delivered the product (version 1.0) to the client in the year 2K. Since that rendition, the system was upgraded to include more dynamic functionality (V2.0). The system was subsequently rolled out to more clients for use as an external communications and marketing tool.
    In 2002, we put the system through a comprehensive review, and decided to increase its functionality as a broad-based marketing tool. Version 3.0 was created. It included a new GUI, as well as proprietary mail handling technology that boasts a 95%+ delivery success rate. Due to it's opt-in format, eNP3 client's experience a lower than standard unsubscribe rate.

Even if you are not a Dreamweaver user, there is lots to learn from what they've done to the new product. (We will have an experienced GoLive Presenter in September.)

  • Preparing and Optimizing Graphics

    SIG Coordinator Bill Cohen-Kiraly and others will give some basics and optimization tricks for making your graphics look their best while keeping the size as small as practicable. Topics will include description of resampling and compression techniques, some of the many kinds of graphics available and demonstration of the several nice and relatively inexpensive software titles that may help you optimize your graphics.
