It’s a Wonderful (Second) Life: Everything You Need to Know About The Brave New Virtual World

With over 13 million “residents” calling it their second home, the online virtual world Second Life has moved from the fringes of the Internet to mainstream culture. In addition to adding avatar and griefing to the public lexicon, and inspiring a new series of IBM techno-parodies (“Making any money on your island yet?”), Second Life has attracted the attention of numerous print journalists, television reporters, and web bloggers, who have asked many of the questions you’ve probably asked as well: Is Second Life a revolutionary social network service, or a really awesome online game? The next great business opportunity, or the latest online passing fancy? An opportunity to explore and express one’s inner being, or the perfect way to kill an hour or two?

At the next General Meeting of the Greater Cleveland PC Users Group, we’ll focus our attention on Second Life, as we:

  • Take an actual virtual tour of Second Life, hosted by our special guest avatar, KeighAhr Svoboda
  • Explain how you can create your own avatar, and make it look exactly (or not at all) like yourself
  • Show how people can, yes, conduct business by exchanging actual money for the virtual currency used in Second Life
  • Explore some of the activities enjoyed by Second Life residents,
  • Review what many “first life” analysts are saying about the significance of Second Life.

Important Meeting Location & Parking Information
