As you surf the web, you are barraged with ads and offers about products and services. Biff gets ads for sports, cars and other guy stuff, while Buffy gets ads for beauty products, clothes and gal stuff. How do the websites know you're Buffy and not Biff? A recent Time Magazine cover story explained the process of data mining, where companies are tracking what you are looking at on the web.
Biff goes to the Cleveland Browns website to read about their draft picks, a tracking cookie gets put on his computer. Buffy goes looking for a new shampoo, she gets a tracking cookie. Over time, these companies build up quite a dossier on you.
So, what's the big deal? This is what keeps the web free. The big deal comes when they can start locating your social security number, birth date and credit information via data mining. Are there ways to block the mining? Do the "do not track" features in the new browsers work? How do you set them up? What else can you do?

Join us on May 14th to hear from Jake Garlie, one of
SecureState's Profiling Consultant, as he walks us through the data mining maze and explains how to get out. Jake performs many assessments including Penetration Tests, Web Application Security Assessments, and Wireless Assessments. In his tenure with SecureState, Jake has worked with organizations across a variety of industries, providing him with the expertise and knowledge of the different ways each industry secures their data.
